Vysiion’s Communication and Infrastructure Consultancy confirmed as Caithness Moray telecommunications supplier. 01/11/16

Vysiion’s Communication and Infrastructure consultancy has been awarded a contract by SSE Contracting Limited to support the progression of the Blackhillock and Spittal HVDC substation development.

The Vysiion team will provide detailed design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the Plant Telecommunications. This is part of the largest investment in transmission infrastructure in Scotland since the 1950s and is an enabler for the rapidly increasing renewable generation in this area.

Caithness Moray Projects

The Caithness Moray Projects led by Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission (‘SHE Transmission’) and contracted to ABB provides a HVDC link between Spittal in Caithness and Blackhillock in Moray. The subsea cable is due for installation in 2017 with a project completion date for 2018. This 320kV DC interconnector has a power rating of 1200MW and the convertor stations will transform this to 275kV at Spittal and 400kV at Blackhillock. The total transmission length is 160km.

Telecommunications Systems

Caithness Moray MapThe Caithness Moray project will include redundant IP Telephony, IP based Public Address including speakers and infrastructure cabling, Hand Held Radio and Satellite phone systems at both Spittal and Blackhillock Converter Stations.  The telecommunications systems will facilitate operational voice communications at both sites (predominantly within the Control Building and associated DC, Valve and Reactor Halls) and also out to other locations via trunk circuits as well as connectivity to the public switched telephone network (‘PSTN’) network.  The satellite phone system provides backup to the Telephony in the event of system failure.

This scope will be delivered over a nine month period starting with the design phase and moving into installation and commissioning during early 2017.  Ongoing support is also provided for the installed systems for an initial five-year period following systems commissioning customer handover.

Michael Grimshaw, Vysiion’s Communication & Infrastructure Sales Manager comments: “This area is an exciting place to be working for Vysiion, it embraces our “can do” approach to projects, we are currently working on three simultaneous projects all evolving around the same scheme to benefit the communities in Northern Scotland. The wide range of activities  on these projects including a varied technology mix within, on and offshore and overhead power line environments.”

Vysiion has an acknowledged pedigree in supporting the utility sector and is also currently engaged in a number of power generation projects, including the Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm project which also lands at Blackhillock, plus Overhead Line works on the Beauly Denny 400kV line where Blackhillock spurs onto.
